SUMMARY
Joel’s a serious high school senior who wants to please his parents and get into a good school. When his parents go out of town leaving him home alone, he finally gives into his friends’ peer pressure and pushes some boundaries. After bringing Lara, a call girl to his house, he ends up partnering with her to bring his friends and her colleagues to a party that grosses $8,000. Of course, in this process he gets mixed up with Guido, a pimp who has his whole house robbed, but that’s not really what we’re going to focus on here.

THE BIZ SPIN
“Enterprise” is consistent theme throughout the movie:

  • Joel’s in a Future Enterprise high school workshop in which he leads marketing for a product his partner creates. Of course, what they have is barely marketable so Joel hasn’t done much in the program
  • Joel’s parents encourage him to talk about the Enterprise program in his Princeton admissions interview
  • The Princeton interview takes place during the very successful call girl/high school party. The interviewer declares that Joel’s qualifications do not meet Princeton’s standards, but his mind is swayed after joining the party himself

HOW YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE THIS MOVIE
It’s got the iconic scene of Tom Cruise dancing around the house in his collared shirt and underwear, using the fireplace tools as a microphone.

NOTABLE CAST
Tom Cruise, mainly….

WHY I LIKE IT FOR BUSINESS
Overall, this movie is all about business and entrepreneurship. While the call girl premise isn’t the most comfortable these days, Lara is actually the real enterpriser in the movie – the highly profitable party is her idea and she effectively runs it. Of course we can also learn from Joel’s naïveté as he lets sex and money cloud his decisions, first by leaving Lara alone in his house (she steals a valuable piece of art) and then as he allows the party to get out of hand and all his furniture is stolen.
